? angel tank
We have recently purchased a 47 gallon tank to put angel fish in and I was wondering if you can put rosey barbs in with them? And how long does it need to cycle before adding them? There are no fish or plants in the tank currently.

No, you can not put rosy barbs with angelfish because they will nip at the angelfishes long fins. Rosy Barbs will nip at any fish with long flowing fins. If you want to cycle the tank you will start of with 3 to 4 fish and at the end of each month you are allowed to get up too 4 or five fish. You will need to do this for the next four months, and when that time period is over you could stock as many fish as you want.

Actually, rosy barbs are a very peaceful type of barb and I would worry more about the angelfish harming THEM.

I wouldn't recommend barbs with cichlids. They would have better luck with tetras but the best would be bottom-area dwellers like loaches, corys or dwarf plecos.

Yeah, even some fish not known for nipping can't resist those slow moving, flowing fins of angelfish.
I kept large Head-and-Taillight tetras with my angels trouble free, but then I've heard other people had problems with them nipping, so sometimes it's trial and error I guess.

I have four rosy barbs in a tank that also has two angels, and I've never had problems with my barbs going after my angels.

Yes, barbs can be mean fin-nippers, but I heard a lot of news that their barbs became peaceful when kept in schools. But I think it's best not to put barbs with angelfish, just to be sure.......they're nice fish, though.....

Please stock sensibly and please don't use fish to cycle a tank. For those that come across this thread and if you're just starting the cycle and you already have fish in the tank, look into a product called bio-spira.

WHY do you suggest cycleing with fish? if someone has an empty tank, and is cycleing without fish, why harm them by putting them in? I had the horrible experience of cycleing with fish because I didnt know better...some made it, some didnt...I just dont understand why you believe this theory ?

Best tankmates would be dwarf gouramis or blue gouramis.
