Where did they go

A week ago my angelfish pair of 2 years now gave birth to there sixth batch of eggs. The female got very defensive and would not even let the male near the eggs. The next morning the batch of eggs were gone, like they had been eaten. There are only three fish in the tank. The angelfish pair and another male angelfish that is blind. So where did they all go.

Just because the other fish in the tank is blind, doesn't mean it doesn't cause stress. If it were me, I would let a mated pair of angels have the entire tank. Less stress = better chance to raise a batch of fry......

Yes they probably ate the eggs. Has this happened before?

This has never happened before when the fry where in the egg stage. I would usually separate the breeding pair and turn off the filter. After the fry where in there 2nd day of free swimming they would all disappear, and if they ate them why would they do that? Angelfish are very caring and protective parents. Could it be because the parents are marble angelfish and this species and those like it have been diluted over many generations, allowing a lose of instincts. They always seemed like perfect parents when it came to their children.

Fishking, I am NOT an angel expert! I do want to get into raising them, but there are many here more knowledgeable than I am. Hopefully this will get some more attention form someone who can answer you with more conviction.....but here goes.

I believe that as a species cichlids are Usually good parents. MANY are even considered excellent, even to the point that they can be left in a community tank and they will defend their fry.

As you say, angels are highly domesticated, and over the eons many instincts can be bred out. I have read about how favorable it is to have a mated pair who raise their own young! Seems that IF they will, the resulting offspring are all-around more vigorous fish....they are taught to eat and so on by the parents. But I THINK, most breeders remove the adults after the fry are wigglers......Now this is like I said, something I am just learning about myself. I do think that once a pair is known to eat their fry, you shouldn't trust them and remove them as soon as the fry hatch. Maybe next time, if you have all other fish out, the two could get back to egg rearing, and at least won't eat them at that stage...... Let us know what happens!

FishKing, I looked up a site that has LOTS of specific help on breeding Angels. Hope this gives you some ideas.

http://www.angelfish.net/yabbse/inde...;threadid=9638

If you click on it and it doesn't go through, you may need to just go to www.angelfish.net and register. Then go to their forum page and click to the link on breeding. Lots of good ideas, though sometimes they are even more long - winded than I am! And they DON'T use any paragraphs, so it is hard to follow...hope this helps...

Hey, have you ever gone to any meetings of the Colorado Aquarium Society? There's a long-time member that's super to talk to about Angels.

From what I know of angels, it's not unusual for them to take a few batches of eggs before they get the idea of not eating them.

Thanks Susitna-Flower that is a really great website. It really good ideas on how to breed angelfish fry artificially, which is the method that I am going to use from now on. I wonder though will the artificial breeding tamper with the fry's natural instinct? Again thank you.
