Really, there is too much generalization going on here. Temperament varies from fish to fish, just like it does from dog to dog, person to person, etc. So, pretty much, you can only try and see.
I got some Paradise Gouramis the other day, and they're supposed to be some of the most aggressive gouramis you can get, not getting along with each other or other species, and mine do just fine. I got a male/female pair, and they don't bother my rasboras, keyholes, bolivian rams, otos, BN pleco, otos or rineloricaria. I'm planning on letting them live in my pond next spring and replacing them with Apistogrammas.
So, in short, all you can do is watch and see, and if you see them getting too aggressive, seperate them(with a divider, breeder box or another tank) and if you don't have anywhere to keep them permanently, take the aggressor back to the petshop.
