Angel help
Apparently I'm inheriting some angels on monday. I've never had them before, and I need a little help/info. There are 2 and the lady says they are about the size of a quarter. (lady didnt want her fish anymore, she was gonna flush them, but I told her I'd take them all). I've got a 20 gallon high tank that I was thinking of putting them in. She also says she has a "silver" fish, and "red and white" fish, and a "sucker fish" (which im assuming is a pleco. I will be putting him in my 55 gallon tank). They are all in a 10 gallon right now, so I figure I'll have enough room for them between all my tanks... I have 2 empty 10s right now as well as the others.
But anyway... what other fish can get along with angels? I've got some cories and otos that I would like to have in the 20 gallon, but if they don't they will be fine in the 10 gallon (its not overstocked).
Also, how do they like their tank set up? I've heard lots of plants... does it matter if they are real or fake?
Any other suggestions on them would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Do you know how well these fish were taken care of not to quarantine them before mixing them into you established tanks?
The twenty high will be good for the angels.Mine always got along with everything except other angels they will need lots of plants be they real or artificial to help break line of sight and allow them to "own" a spot of their own.

I actually had to empty my 20 gallon to re-seal it, so I was going to keep them in there to quarantine them. How long should i keep them apart from my other fish? I saved the gravel from the tank and have been keeping the bacteria alive (put it in a new rubbermaid container w/ the filter and water from the tank and have been "feeding" it twice a day). So hopefully it will be ok cycle wise.
As for the plants... Is it better to put the plants in the middle of the tank (kinda divide it in half ?) or just randomly put all over?
thanks for your help!

I would keep them separate at least two weeks. Just some plants to give them a place to rest or hide if they need to would be good.
Good for you for taking them I love angels

I've thought about getting them, but I've never actually gotten any before. I didn't want to see them flushed so I figured I could make some room for all of them. I just hope there aren't any that will get too large. I'm worried about the "red and white" one. I really hope it isn't a clown loach. They are beautiful fish, but i don't have room to buy him any buddies and give him the space he needs. But... like I said, they are in a 10 gallon tank right now, so even an upgrade to the 20 will be better than nothing until I can figure something out.
Anyways... another angel question.... Do they like driftwood? I've got a few pieces I usually keep in the 20 gallon, I was unsure if I should put them in for the angels. My ph usually runs 7.6 or so. I found with the driftwood in the tank it ran 7.2-7.3.

Hi Mlinden...
Since you only have the two angels I am sure they will do fine in the 20g tank. And since they are so small you can introduce other fish with them at this point. I have two angels in a 29g tank and they get a long great. They have been together from the time I bought them six months ago. One is about six inches and the other is about four.I have found that now when I try to introduce other fish in with them, that it just does not work. They are now too big to accept any other fish. I put a black skirt tetra in the tank and one went right at it. The time I introduced cardinal tetras to the tank they thought it was lunch! I find that it is just so much better, at least for me to just keep the angels by themselves.
They like amazon sword plants, and driftwood is a nice touch to any tank, tho I dont think it really matters to them if it is in there or not. Tho if it does lower the PH in your tank that would be a great idea.Angels do better in a lower PH. I have silk plants in with them at this point and they are fine with that, so its a personal choice for you whether to add live or silk. I personally think that live plants are so much better for fish anyway and will add live amazon sword when I can.
So in my experience I do not know what fish can go in with them, tho others have had all kinds of fish in with them and they are doing fine. I think the main thing is to start them off young with other fish in the tank.

Thanks for the advice. She said they were pretty small, and they have others in the tank (although I'm assuming it's pretty crowded... you can't fit many in a 10 gallon and have them be happy about it). I will put them all the in 20 to quarantine them, then see how it goes from there. It would really help if I knew what the others were. Ohwell at least I have enough tanks that I can split them up if needed.
Is there anything else special I need to know about angels? Any certain temps? Any special foods they like? (do they eat flakes?)

good morning mlinden
as far as my angels go.. they eat like hounds! It really doesnt matter what you put in the tank.. they will eat it. They are such piggies.
I feed my guys omega one cichlid flakes, frozen brine shrimp, they love those, but I have read that there really is not a lot of nutritional value in the brine shrimp which really surprised me to find this out. So I have cut down on that for all my fish and now I am using New Life Spectrum all purpose pellets. Seems this brand is top notch with not a lot of fillers and great ingredients.
I feed them frozen bloodworms as well. They will eat just about anything you give them!
The temps I keep around 80* for them. Other than that, they are doing great and are easy to care for.

Yep Kate has pretty much covered everything And as she said angels are pigs. they will also beg for food and make you think they are starving so you may have to be a little hard hearted to keep from feeding them too much
I fed mine Omega one color flakes. Omega one includes the skins of fish to help inhance your fishes color instead of chemicals. They also ate Omega one freeze dried blood worms as well as Omega One frozen blood worms, and shrimp. Can you tell I'm stuck on Omega One? It can be a little hard to find. But there are plenty of good foods out there. 80F is a good temp as they don't do well if they get chilled.

And thanks to everyone for your advice!

I picked up the "rescues" tonight. The 2 that the lady said were angels turned out to be tiger barbs, a 5 inch pleco, the red and white ones are the glowfish danios, and then there is one fish I don't exactly know what it is. Looks kinda like a guppy(female) with a long flowing tail and side fins. It has very faint stripes. I'm thinking it is probably some sort of danio. But it is severely deformed (HUGE hunchback). But it seems to be doing ok so far. They were in a 10 gallon tank (poor pleco... he was added to my 55 gallon) the rest were put in my 20 gallon tank. I'll add some more tiger barbs after a few weeks I think, and eventually put in my 2 panda cories and otos.
LoL well i know a lot about angels now, but I don't have any!! Looks like I'll have to do my homework on danios and tiger barbs now!!
