New to Angels

I am new to angel fish and have read on many post that having more than 2 angels can be a problem. I added 2 angel fish at the same time to my tank last week, then like 3 days later I couldn't help but by a third when I saw him on an unplanned trip by the pet store. Was this a mistake or should I add an other to try to pair them off? I have a 29 gallon tank with 3 sword tails that the 3 angels.

Re: New to Angels

So does anyone know what I should do? Should I get one more or take on of the Angels out. They are not aggresive yet, but I would hate for any of these to get hurt!!!

hello and welcome to fishlore!
I have two angel fish myself and at one time they were in the 29g with other fish. when my rainbow platys ended up dead and the other fish scared and staying in corners or behind plants i knew that there was a problem. It may have been just one of the angels that was causing it or both. I only witnessed one of them ramming fish from time to time. I moved the two to a 10g tank by themselves for the time being. They have another 29g that will be set up soon for them. My suggestion would be, that if these two are getting along in your tank, I would not add another. Just watch for any aggression towards your swordtails from the angels. Angelfish are cichlids and that species can be semi aggressive to each other and other tankmates. For myself, Im keeping these two angels by themselves and not going to take any chances adding any other fish with them. Just watch how your two angel fish behave towards each other and you will know what you should do. If you find any aggression towards each other, I dont think getting another angelfish will stop it, it will just give it another angelfish to pick on. I think if you find that the two are fighting with each other, then I would IMO bring the aggressor back, leave the peaceful one in the tank. Maybe you will be lucky and have two that are going to get along fine with each other, as my two are. Good luck with your angels!

PS... just re read your post and I see that you did get a third angelfish. Well for now, they may be young and will not be territorial or become a pair yet, but at some point two will pair off and the third will be harrassed. You will have to watch, wait and see, and take action at that time. Maybe for a few days you can watch to see which two get along the best and then bring back the third one to your LFS for a trade in?

Re: New to Angels

Thanks Kate! I will monitor them cause it seems that the third angel that I added has made a friend with one of the ones that was already in the tank. I might have to move one of the originals if things get aggressive. I think that it will be a while before they do. They are still young I think. But beautiful. I will post some pics soon.

Re: New to Angels

Hi Carlos
your tank set up looks very nice ! Thanks for the photos! Your marbles and calico angel fish are very pretty. They look pretty young by the size of them next to your swordtails. So you may have some time before you notice any aggression.
Good luck with your babies.. they are all very sweet looking!

Re: New to Angels

Thanks for the compliments. I was going to add more plants and stuff but my wife likes the tank simple. And rater see the fish that have to look hard to find them. I think that I might add just one more hiding spot so that the angels and the swords both can have a spot. Any way take care and thanks for your comments.

Just a question about that, ive got 2 young marble angels, about 1.5 inch big + fins,
in a 40 gallon tank with 2 gold gouramis, how old are they when they start to develop aggression?
