Making sure everything will be cool...

Have a small ocellaris clown and was planning on getting a bubble tip (I hear they're the most likely anemone to pair with that fish, unless someone knows better). 29 gal w/ plenty of substrate, rock, and really good lighting, T5 HO w/ actinic. Have a small powerhead and I'm guessing I need another. Is everything fine for the anemone? Keep the temp at 78, pH 8.3, and salinity is 1.024 (lower?). I also have an eibili angel and would they be alright together? Thanks, including a pic of the tank, powerhead is in top rear corner.

To my knowledge, BTAs are not the normal match for an ocellaris, though the ocellaris may adapt to host it. Here is a link of clown/anemone matches.

Either way, I would wait a couple more months before jumping on the anemone. Generally it is recommended that a tank be up and maturing for around 6 months before adding an anemone. Lighting will be the other big factor for the anemone, but T5s should be fine for a BTA. Other anemones might require metal halides.

thanks, tank is 4 months old. Just trying to make sure that I can get the thing up and running correctly and not endanger the anemone.

I'm kind of updating my question from above or at least modifying it. I thought that I would be more specific in my equipment and parameters.

I have a 29 gal tank, bought used from a friend $20. It has been running now for around 4 months. Have 28#s LR, 20#s LS, 4 turbo , skunk cleaner, and a red legged hermit crab. I had an Ocellaris clown but he's gone.
My parameters and equipment are such:
ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - < 10
pH - 8.3
Spec Grav - .025
Copper - 0
Temp - 79

Lighting -
2 T5 HO 10000k
2 450 nm actinics
2 Moon glow leDs

Powerhead - 400gph

The only thing else I want to stock it with are a pair of clowns and a sea anemone. I'm moving in a month so I'm in no rush, don't plan on doing anything til I get the tank setup in new house. In fact, don't really plan on buying the anemone for at least another couple of months.

My questions are:

1 What other test kits do I need?
2 Do I need a protein skimmer, and if so which is a good HOB one? I heard the remora HOB is good as long as it has the Maxi Jet pump.
3 Which anemone should I get?
4 Which clowns should I get that would have the best chances of hosting above anemone?
5 Do I need more LR for better filtration?
6 Do I need another powerhead?
7 I have a HOB filter right now, but my LFS says that if I have enough LR and protein skimmer I don't need the HOB filter. How much more live rock would I need?
8 How difficult would it be to make a sump for the tank and how big would it have to be?

Thanks for any and all help

A skimmer will get your nitrates down. Throw in another 10#s live rock. Get at least another 200gph of flow from another powerhead, or get one large powerhead and put one of those rotating deflectors on it to help with turbulant flow (shoot for something like 600gph of flow, which would be decreased with that rotating head, so more like 800gph). A 10gallon sump would increase your water amount by 33% and allow you to put the skimmer, heater, etc down below keeping the tank looking clean up top, and you can lose the HOB filter.

Wow, I haven't even set my tank up and knew those answers, lol. If only I spent as much time studying as I do researching my fish tank setup.

1. phosphate calcium (if keeping corals)
2. you dont need a skimmer but a bio star flotar is good hob (skimmer and filter) only down side is a small collection cup but is good look at reviews on hob skimmers google it

3.for a while none as a anemone needs a mature tank

4.this is a personal choice as clowns dont always host anemones they may host on your live rock it depends wot takes there fancy you have more chance with a wild caught clown and a sea anemone not a bta

5 the more the better imo with the right flow works great the more natural filtering the better

6. with only one power head you end up with more dead spots so another one wont hurt and will help with filtering with your live rock

7. if you are going to add corals you normally get live rock with them so just take in to account wot you plan to put in so i would go with about 5 k if adding corals or 10 if you aint ,,

8.personally i have always gone with as bigger sump as i can fit as it gives you more options in your design like a refugium a eco section equipment section bubble trap and return pump section it really depends on equipment and wot you wont to put in sump ,,, look at different designs as theres loads out there and just make sure it dont overflow in a failure
