I have 3 of them. They've been doing quite fine in my small lil' pond. I feed them live feeder fish every 2-3 weeks as treats. What type of turtles are you planning to keep?

Hello
I've had turtles all my life. My biggest kids right now are my Red Eared SLiders, i got them the size of a quarter and the female is 10" and growing... the male is like 6-7 inches. It really depends on what kind of turtle you want on their set up. I reccomend you start with the smaller ones.

Shawnie, that's not nearly enough! I have 1 dog, 4 cats, 2 leopard geckos, 1 frog, and 5 fish tanks. I'd love to get a bird too!

I wasnt commenting the amount of animals and more on the amount of different threads Betafish305ca has started about all different kinds of animals recently..and wondered if they were all current or wants ...not the amount kept

I think we all have an array to go around

Here is a really good website that I learned a lot from before I got my turtle:

www.turtleforum.com

The smallest kind of turtle gets to be 4" long (and I don't think they are commonly available), so no, there's no such thing as a mini turtle, if you mean one that stays the size of a quarter.

Also, be careful, because a commonly available type of tortoise is the Sulcata, which is generally sold as a 2" or less baby but which will grow to be 25+ inches long and up to 200 pounds.

I totally agree with maddielynn
stay away from red eared sliders (aquatic) and the sulcata. they are the biggest in the pet industry

Nothing to be sorry about!

I like Greek tortoises. They're easy to care for, stay pretty small, and live a really long time! The one we had at work was really friendly. When meeting new people, she was shy for only about the first 30 seconds. Then you could pet her on the head.

It is illegal in the US to sell turtle hatchlings with a shell diameter of under 4". I've reported illegal sales with great success, one being a mall that was selling them with just a little turtle lagoon (sigh). Got that story into the news and the operation shut down . Other than salmonella poisoning and impulse buys, a lot of those guys don't do spectacularly well (some never start eating).

If you are interested I would look for an adult turtle. However, most get to be a decent size and would need a huge tank eventually or a pond or indoor pool...I think the rule of thumb is 1" of shell diameter per 10 gallons. Red Ear Sliders (very common) get to be about 10-12", so you are looking at a 100g tank eventually. I don't have turtles but wanted them at one point, but decided it was too much work/housing would be difficult. Just google general information, you'll find lots of good stuff.
