axolotls haven't been eating much

I have two axolotls but lately they haven't been eating much. I feed them the frozen blocks. Generally they eat half a block. I can normally get them to eat half of that but sometimes they will go days without eating. I have held the food in front of their face but they don't seem interested. Does anyone have any advice on how to get them feeding again?

Hi Michelle,Welcome to Fishlore! How warm is their tank and the weather where you are? They don't like things to get too warm, this could be affecting their appetites.

Hello Michele and Welcome to Fish Lore. You may find the above link helpful if you haven't seen it already. Too, if you'll go to the top right hand side of this screen and do a "search" for Axolotls I'm sure you'll find some more information there.
Have fun and enjoy the site. I hope you can share some photos with us sometime.

the water is pretty cold. Is it possible to be too cold? I don't have a gauge on the tank but it's room temperature and the room they are in is freezing. I don't think they are too hot. It's a 70L tank so there is plenty of room for them to move about.
they have never been overly interested in coming to the surface to eat. I always have to hold the food in their face. I've been thinking I need to get a long pair of tweezers or something so I don't have to freeze my hand off every day.

It could be too cold. I think that if it gets below about 57 degrees their metabolism slows down. I would highly recommend getting a thermometer. There could of course be other things contributing, disease, poor water quality, too much water movement... Any information you could give us would be helpful.
Welcome to fishlore!

I'll pick up a temperature gauge as soon as I can. The water if flowing but I don't think it's too hard on them. I've faced the filter away from the main area of the tank so it's only fast in one corner but they don't go there very often.
Thanks for all the help!
