Chytrid Fungus

Hello everyone

I'm new here and have quite the problem.

You see....I recently purchased two african dwarf frogs that I believe have the chytrid fungus. I'm currently treating them but yesterday I bought a moss ball and anubias nana plant for their tank. I had the plants in the tank for all of 10 mins and realized something was up with my ADF's. I took the plants out and put them in their own jar of water.
Well I was wondering if it is possible to put the plants in with my bettas? Or any other fish for that matter? I have read this fungus only attack amphibians but I don't want to put them with my other fish unless absoultely certain that it won't harm them.
Can anyone help me out

Hi Welcome to Fish Lore
I'm sorry about your ADF's. What treatment are you using?

Fish can't get Chytrid Fungus.
The problem I would worry about is cross contamination.
If you put the moss ball or plants in with the fish then use the same syphon, net or anything from the infected tank in your frog tank you take the risk of infecting the frogs again.
If for some reason you had your hands in a tank that had been exposed to Chytrid then put them in the frog tank you risk contaminating them again.

I don't know what the chances are that the plants picked it up but
personally to avoid any contamination, I think I'd toss the moss ball/plant.
Good luck, I hope your ADF's recover.

I'm using the Lamisil AT treatment. The one that sprays.
10 squirts to 200ml of water
Do you think I could dip the plants into a diluted bleach solution and that would kill any of the fungus that may be on them??
Thank you for your help

I know it's advised to bleach tanks (the ratio depends on whether it's glass or acrylic).
I honestly don't know about the plants.
In this link you'll find the instructions for using Lamisil, it mentions tossing out plants and gravel.
Important: Chytrid Fungus in ADF's and ACF's

Personally, I'd toss them. I lost an ADF to what I believe was the fungus and I tossed out the fake plants, gravel, filter media, air tubing and bleached the tank filter and heater.
It's just so deadly, I didn't want to chance it.

Okay, I will probably just toss them then.
Now...to disenfect my tank. Would it be okay to run diluted bleach solution through my filter so every part of the filter is disenfected??

That shoud be ok. Any part that can't be submerged should be wiped down with the bleach also.
Are your frogs infected or are you doing this as a precautionary measure?

I'm pretty sure they have the fungus. I moved them to a quarantine tank away from their usual tank so I can treat them easier. After a few treatments my one girl (who had a severe case of it, she was shedding in pieces) has stopped shedding completely. I'm giving both my frogs 5 minute lamisil baths. And making sure I disenfect everything with bleach inbetween each use.

Could a mod please move this to the amphibian section?

My ADF's aren't doing much better than when I started the treatment. The one that didn't have anything wrong with her before is still the same. No sign of the fungus what so ever. My other frog (the one that looked very sick) still has pieces of "skin" coming off of her in shards. For about a day there she started to look better but now she is looking the same.
I am treating using the 5 minute lamisil baths and disenfecting everything with bleach in between baths. I'm on my 8th day of treatment.
They are eating though.

Do you think I should do anything differently? Or just keep everything the same and continue treatment?

From what I've read you're doing what you should to give your frog the best chance.
The continued shedding during treatment isn't unusual., hopefully when your done treatment he'll perk up for you.

I'm at a loss. The treatment isn't working. Its only seeming to keep the fungus at bay :sigh:
I found this one online http://www.flippersandfins.net/ChytridBCTreatment.htm
It uses a different type of solution to what I am using now. I'm using the lamisil with the active ingredient being Tebinafine hydrochloride.
Should I try this one?
I'm so fed up with of all my poor pets being sick...

I was hoping the lamisil worked for you.
From what I've read and been advised, there's been a lot of success with Benzalkonium Chloride.
I'm pretty sure you have to order it on line.

I saw that you have to order it online which stinks but if it will cure my froggies completely I will give it a shot.
