Hi Zachary
Either really small or bigger than its head , as they can inhale it when feeding .The small will pass through if swallowed . This is what is recommended but I have not had any problems with 1cm gravel .
How big is the axolotl you plan on getting , 5 gal would be ok for a small 1 for a short time if you are prepared to do some extra water changes .
A 2ft 20gal tank would be the minimum tank size . A 3ft would be better and can hold 2 .
They dont eat fish food , hatchlings will eat brine shrimp . The best food is worms which you can get from most fishing tackle stores , just rinse them off and wiggle in front of its face . Try not to flinch ... lol
They will eat every day when young and can reach around 9-12 inches in the first year .
The filter sounds fine , you can do things like put plants in front of the outlet to break up the flow .
I think they are great .

I would not try any gravel at all. Most importantly it can become impacted, it traps debris, and is, in my opinion, ugly. Try sand or use some river stones, which are much larger. For food, I would definitely use earthworms as a staple diet. They are very nutritious. Have you gone to axolotl.org? That's probably the best care website out there. There is also a forum with plenty of people willing to answer your questions.

Also, don't kill the food before you feed it to them. Axolotls are sight feeders (they have very good eyesight), and the movement triggers the feeding response.
