| | Fish Bum | ADF a good fit with my tank? The tank in question:
- 12 gallon Eclipse
- 7 harlequin rasboras
- 2 ramshorn snails
- assorted pond snails, population thinned manually
I used to have a dwarf puffer in my 5 gallon tank; that's where the snails came from. The rams have turned into pets, the ponds population is under control because I don't feed too much.
Based on my reading it seems an ADF would fit here. The rasboras aren't terribly speedy and don't eat off the substrate.
I would assume one would be my limit (which is fine).
Thanks in advance! |

| | Moderator | Hi Welcome to Fish Lore
Personally, I like a species only frog tank but as long as you make sure the rasboras don't get to the food first, you should be ok. I can't imagine the snails are faster than the ADF. lol
Here's our Care Sheet For African Dwarf Frogs
We hope you post some pics
Good luck. |

| | Fish Master | welcome to fishlore lucy's the ADF expert here, she's got you covered! the only thing i would add is to watch your frogs and make sure that they eat when you feed them |

| | Fish Bum | Me again So they will root for food. I've read elsewhere that they really don't.
Sinking pellets...do they have to be 'frog' pellets or would 'carnivore' pellets work? Just want to be sure. My rasboras don't ever eat off the substrate, so I think if the frogs will do a little work looking for food they'll get enough. I think I'll ease the temp up on the tank prior to getting one as I keep it around 72. |

I don't know what carnivore pellets are but the frog pllets are formulated for the ADF's nutritional needs.
It wouldn't be a good idea to just let them rummage around for left over fish food.
72F is kind of cool for thgem, so yeah, slowing rising the temp is a good idea before getting one. |

| | Fish Bum | Well, the 'rooting around' wouldbe for the bloodworms or frog pellets; not any leftover fish food. But I've read some places that basically if the food isn't right in front of their face they won't find it. I dunno, it seems to me if an animal is hungry it'd look for food, especially if they could smell it
Am I correct that 1 would be optimum for this tank? My wife's going to ask if we can get two; I know it... I'd love to get two but don't want to overstock. I do 20% weekly water changes. I'd much rather err on the side of caution but figured I'd confirm my suspicions. |

| | Moderator | ADF's would count as 2.5" of fish, so yeah, I would say 1 as I'm not sure about the bio-load of snails, just heard that they create quite a bit of waste.
If your 5g is empty, you could put 2 ADF's in there.
If you decide to get 2, it's best to get them at the same time from the same tank. Their Q time is at least 2 months due to the highly contagious Chytrid Fungus |

| | Fish Addict | i feed mine mainly thawed frozen bloodworm and they find it fine (in a psecies tank tho,so there is no competion. I think 2 should be ok as the have a relativly low bioload |

When there's eggs in the tank (I have a male and female) they root through the gravel to get at any eggs thats have dropped to the bottom.
Be careful of the size gravel you have. If it's too small they could grab a peice and be in real trouble. |

Haha...that's a consideration as well. I'm concerned that in a small tank like that with 7 rasboras 2 ADFs might be a bit crowded. I think I'll go with one.
Our substrate is standard gravel; it's pretty smooth and not too small. Not so big as to create large nooks where worms/pellets could easily sink either, or for froggy legs to get stuck in. I thought I put the 5g inhabitants in my profile but I guess that's as far as it got...it's housing a betta and has larger (though very smooth) substrate in it, so that's not gonna work
Thanks for all the advice; it'll probably be a week or so before we get one but I'll scout out the local stores to see what's available and how they look. |

| | Fish Bum | Oh, those carnivore pellets? Found a link here Ingredients are:
Fish meal, krill meal, alpha starch, fish oil, wheat flour, dried seaweed meal, spirulina, brewer's dried yeast, enzyme, astaxanthin, canthaxanthin, DL-methionine, L-lysine, vitamins and minerals including stabilized vitamin C.
If I can't find frog pellets would these work? Just trying to develop a backup in case I need one.
They do seem fun, and different. We had a hillstream loach in this tank previous and silly me listened to the LFS that it would be a good fit for the tank. He did okay, but the enviornment wasn't perfect for him. Thus the extensive frog research this time around |

| | Moderator | The look like they'd be too big for an ADF's. You shouldn't have any problems finding HBH Frog and Tadpole bites in petsmart. I didn't see them on their website.
I feed mine mainly thawed frozen blood worms. I only give the occasionally. ( Like when I'm lazy or my daughter is going to feed them because she hates blood worms. lol) |
