African Dwarf Frogs disapearing!

Hi All,

I am totally stumped. About a month ago, we came back from the aquarium store with four ADF. They are definitely African Dwarf Frogs and not their bigger cousins the Clawed Frogs.
First, two disapeared. Now, we are down to one. We have a Oceanic Biocube tank with the filter intakes covered with mesh screen. When we first brought them home they were hiding in the filter intakes so I made sure to attach some plastic screen over them. I've also checked the filter areas and found nothing. Is it possible that the last man standing ate the other 3? I didn't think that was possible, but the others have literally vanished. The tank has a lid so I know they didn't jump out. And there is just no way that I can see that they are stuck in the filter. And there are no other fish in the tank. Has anyone ever experienced this before? It is just baffling!

Hi welcome to Fish Lore

I moved your question to a thread of it's own so it will get the attention it deserves.

I'm really sorry your little guys are disappearing.
They can squeeze through the tiniest areas so I would check outside the tank.
Are there any decorations they could have gotten stuck in? It would be a good idea to look inside the filter. It's possible they could have gotten up the out take.

I had one that got out of a tiny gap. I was lucky enough to see him hop on the rug. I was quite shocked he could get out.

I know fish will eat dead fish with nothing to be found. I don't know if that's the case with frogs, but they are carnivores.

Good luck.

My friend had 2 in a 10 gal. and they also disappeared. We came to the conclusion that they jumped out & are dead somewhere in her dorm room. Lovely, no?

if you have a fine substarate they may have buried, its unlikely they ate each other, also what other fish do u have in the tank and is the lid secure?

I had one of those a long time ago in a tank with Angels and he went missing really quickly after I got him. I never found him.
Do you have a cat or dog that might have found the frog after he jumped?

I know that this thread is old, but my ADF SOMEHOW snuck out of a VERY tight sealed tank yesterday ... we found him dried up by the front door ... good thing we have child proof door knobs!

He was my favorite, I must say that I am depressed ...

I'm really sorry, that stinks. It's amazing how they can squeeze through the tiniest places. Mine did that but I was lucky enough to see him hopping on the floor.

My friends roommate just found her ADF - dried up under her bed.

I went to my LFS just before supper ... they had 5 or 6 of them there, but I need to figure out where he snuck through ... I may just get a 5 gallon hex with solid top for the next one ... just what I need, another aquarium!

this just happened to me last week!
my tank was all covered up and my ACF disappeared.
i looked everywhere in the floor around the tank and i could not find him
all the time i was looking for him he was in the tank, inside a part of an ornament were i could not see until i moved it.
check under and inside ornaments and rocks, he is probably still in the tank.

if you find him or her try feeding them by hand, just wiggle some food infront of it and it will take it. (i did it with mine)
Good luck=)

This is a pretty old thread.....please check the date before responding.
The OP only posted once and hasn't been back.

Thanks!
