African Dwarf Frogs... why can't I keep these around?

I have had 2 of these... one I had about 3 weeks.. the other a couple of days... My water conditions are pretty good..
PH is 7.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10

The last frog started laying on his back Saturday night, then would flip over & act OK... then yesterday morning seemed OK, a few hours later, he was upside down again... I tried to get him to swim, but he was dead.

Another thing.. how are they supposed to act?
The first frog hid alot for a week or more, then started getting active & making allot of trips to the top of the tank. Second frog hid some but swam to the top & would float then go & hide, sometimes sit out in the open.

One other thing... Fae AFD OK to go in a small 1.5 gal acrylic tank by themselves? I have a feeling they are not getting the food.. I try to get it as close as possible to the frog, but all my fish & the shrimp get over there and start eating right out from under the frog.

Thanks for any help.

Re: African Dwarf Frogs... why can't I keep these around?

First, let me say I'm sorry that you have lost a frog. Second, what is your water temp?

I have a 10G tank with only ADFs. Our family was first introduced to them thru our daughter who brought them home at the end of the school year from their science class---that was before we knew about cycling a tank. Since we have kept the same ones for about 2 months.

We keep our tank around 78 degrees and I feed them every 3 days (frozen bloodworms). ADFs are prone to be anorexic. I have occasionally taken them out of the tank and put them into a small container and then put their full portion of bloodworms into the small container. It's basically spoon feeding them (little work and small space to search). My ADFs have been quite adaptable to water challenges--our pH has been 8.0 for weeks and we are trying to survive an algae outbreak.

As far as their behavior, ours hide in their rock for most of the time. I occasionally catch them swimming to the top of the tank for air and then "rocketing" to the gravel. I see them the most active while eating and afterwards. Do you have any plants for them to hide in?

My best website for ADF info is: http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/mypets/dwarfs.html I hope this helps!

Good Luck and Best Wishes,

-M

Re: African Dwarf Frogs... why can't I keep these around?

Thanks for the info M

Water temp is around 78-79
Feeding frozen bloodworms, but I think the other fish were getting them... the first frog, I think was eating shrimp pellets to, maybe that's why he lasted longer, however, I always tried to get the worms right by the frogs... but not sure what else it could have been.

We returned frog #2 to the petstore, for another today... & I have put frog #3 in the 1 gallon tank that I had set up several weeks ago for a quarantine tank.. I had tested the water a couple of days ago & the results were exactly the same as the 20 Gallon tank. I will keep a close eye & check the water often.
I have given him a few plants & a cool house to hang out in (hopefully)

I will post some picts soon of the tank.

Thanks Again

Re: African Dwarf Frogs... why can't I keep these around?

Well, it certainly seems like you are doing everything right! I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to watch feeding time and see them get little to nothing. I know that ADFs smell their food and then go after it. I have noticed in my own tanks that it can take a minute or two for them to "sense" the frozen bloodworms, but then they turn into really good hunters. I also feed my fish flake food sometimes and have noticed that they must smell the flakes sooner than the worms. I was also told by my LFS (a great one) that they feed theirs tubifex as well as bloodworms.

I wish you all the best and let me know how everything works out. We would like to add fish to our tank, but worry about which ones and right now we are just trying to combat an algae problem!

GOOD LUCK,

-M

Thanks Again M

OK... got some pictures...

Froggy in the "window"

Only have $2 into the whole tank (except for the frog)

The Oriental building is old, my grandma gave it to me.. it was the only thing I had small enough to fit in the tank to give him good hiding spaces.. I have been watching to make sure it is going to be OK for him, I hope it works out

Re: African Dwarf Frogs... why can't I keep these around?

Well, I thought eveything was OK.. then last night another frog (I have lost count ... this is #4 or 5) she started acting different than normal last night, now tonight, she is doing what some of the others did.. swimming slow & strange... sideways & I have seen her flip once on her back... it is not looking good. This one is really playful & always peeking thru holes in the rocks & stuff... & will get her food, even protect it from other fish when she can.... we have had her a week tomorrow
I just don't understand why this keeps happening.

Re: African Dwarf Frogs... why can't I keep these around?

I'm really sorry! How are your fish doing? Any problems with them? Do you trust the quality of fish/frogs from where you are getting your frogs? After our first set from our daughter's class died and we learned about cycling tanks and had everything "right", we still went thru 2 more frogs for reasons I don't know. I take it your water parameters are still good, right? Are these frogs in your 1.5G or your 20G?
I wish I had some advice that would keep your frogs from dying, but I would be lying. Maybe we can rule out some things with the questions above, otherwise it just might have been some sick or weak frogs.

Let me know if I can be of any help. I wish you luck!!
