I have admired Blue Acara for a long time, but have never owned one myself....Until now!
On Friday, I was bought one. Unfortunately I was unprepared for this new addition, since my Q tank's heater is on the blink....So, I added him to my community aquarium, thinking he would be okay for a few days(since he is quite small) until I could go buy a new heater.
Sadly, I was very very wrong! Within a few hours He had literally torn the heads off of two of my Angels and was relentlessly persuing my guppies around the tank....Bizarrely enough He completely ignored my Ram, which I thought was probably the only fish He's actually have any initial problems with.
I had read, and have read again today, that Blue Acara are generally peaceful fish and are suitable for the community aquarium....I guess what I'm doing here, is trying to warn everyone that this is not always the case!
I have kept various Cichlids in my time and can honestly say that I have never encountered such an aggressive fish!
I am sure that they are not all like mine, but I am now at a loss as to what to do with him....He is now in a tank on his own, but obviously I don't really want to keep him that way. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can keep with him? Maybe some female Acara - keep it single species....Or are there any other fish I could keep with him that will not rapidly have their heads removed?
Here are a couple of pics of my little monster....
Any help, comments or suggestions would be gratefully received.
Edit: Retyped the post as I stupidly deleted half of it while correcting a pic posting problem....D'Oh!
