Yup, I bought these. Now what.

Good Afternoon Fishlorians,
For some crazy reason I felt the urge to buy these guys, http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/aucti...idsw1240765257

Mainly because they are a stunning fish and because I'm dying to have some babies around here!!!..lol..I thought it was a good deal so in a sleepy state I bought them. I know they are aggressive little buggers and would do best in a species only tank. What size would you guys recommend??..I researched these guys all night last night So i have a pretty good understanding of what they need but any advice will be welcomed and appreciated. What kind of set up do they prefer, What do they normally spawn in, What are some good foods for these guys. I want to know everything I can about these guys. So if you have experience or just are educated about them please enlighten me. Thanks guys. I'll let ya all know when I get them and or course get pics.

I know
I've gone mad. Really and truly mad..lol....What is a girl to do though??..I almost bid on 3 other auctions last night too..lol...I guess my house remodel isn't keeping me busy enough. I would have ended up with a trio of breeding ABN but my daughter turned the computer off right before the auction ended. and I didn't get it rebooted fast enough..Of course she thought that was hilarious. Never get on Aquabid late at night. Let this be a lesson to you all..
I PM'd Nick last night before I bought them to see what he thought. He's such a good guy and helped me out of course. His ended up spawning but since they are in with Oscars and other big dudes they were eaten, the fry that is..lol.

Beautiful fish though, I can see why you couldn't resist them.

Sure...We'll say that..lol...Whatever makes it easier for hubby to write it off..lol...Actually I didn't get anything for my Bday since we're remodeling..I'm getting a new Bedroom so that's good enough..I just bought these because I wanted them and I thought the price was fair. But maybe I can use the ole "birthday gift to myself" for some other fish..Thanks for the idea Jonah... .

LoL on your daughter turning off the computer in the middle of an auction.. maybe she did the right thing haha..
Im sure that Nick gave you great advice on the jewel cichlids. I can say that I had a pair in my tank, but not sure if they were both males or not. They were so aggressive with each other and others that I had to return them to the LFS. Sure they are gorgeous.. and mine were beautiful but it was not worth the terrible aggressive nature of these fish.
What other fish are you keeping with them?

They will have a tank all to themselves. I'm looking for a 30gallon long but If I can't find one they can go in the 120gallon until I do. The 120 is emtpy so they will have it all to themselves. One of the many perks of my MTS, I have allot of empty tanks..lol.
From the research that I've done I've found that they are SUPER aggressive toward other fish esp during breeding so I figured species only is the way to go. Nick keeps his pair with some bigger more aggressive fish and I think they do ok but for now I'll just keep them by themselves.

Edit: about the auction...I totally think it happened for a reason..I got back on 1 min to late so that's a BIG sign I wasn't suppose to have those fish. She did me a favor IMO.

I've seen folks keep jewels with texas cichlids/ various carpintis / green terrors... basically most your larger CA/SA fish.. generally more th CA fish as they can handle the aggression of the red jewel. if I weren't already stocked to the max I'd have gotten one as well. 75gallon would be the minimum with these sized fish (regarding the CA/SA's) If you kept them in the 120 and went with an SA/CA theme, your options would explode a fair bit as you'd have quite a few choices to work with. Some of these fisha re just naturally aggressive. Personally I enjoy seeing thema ct as they would in the wild, as long as everyone has their own space to retreat to. However, I have heard of a 3-4" jewel running after an 8" jaguar. had the jaguar chosen to, he would have mutilated the jewel but that jewel has such a chihuahua complex, it had everyone else in the tank scared. That was a 180 gallon, 6 foot long tank.

Can't wait to see pics Cesch! On another note, they're actually African Cichlids, not American, but can only be kept with American Cichlids.

Thanks Carol!!..When I got them they had zero color to them and have already really colored up. I can't wait to see what they look like when they have made themselves at home and are breeding. They are fun fish to watch.

Well that just makes me want them more than I did before. I have been trying to stay away from aquabid AMAP but maybe one more trip there.

I knew I had MTS and I knew I had something going on with having to have every kind of fish I see....now I have a name for it MFS.

Hey if you get any fry out of these two maybe we could do a trade? You could get some different fish and so could I...how could we go wrong LOL!!

Glad to meet another with MTS and MFS. I have some baby EBJD and baby rainbow cichlids, assorted mollies, cherry red shrimp. Well that is what I have babies of for now anyway but the future promises more babies I hope. I love trades you get good stuff from great people. I have some more tanks to setup and I am always on Craigslist looking for more. It will never end but I kinda like it like that...LOL. Good to meet you and keep me posted on the babies.
