How can I get rid of this algae?

Hello All,

For some calcium, I've got cuttlebone in my tanks. I've noticed lately that in my 20 gal tank, the cuttlebone has white hair algae (I believe that's what it is). It's only on the side that touches the gravel. I have brown algae elsewhere in the tank; not a problem though.

Why is this white hair algae only on the cuttlebone? Can I get rid of it other than just throwing away the piece of cuttlebone?

Thanks!!
Robin

Hello Robin. I'm not sure as to why the white hair algae is only on your cuttle bone. It usually gets all over everything. It's very common especially in newly established aquariums. You can simply wipe it off, too some fish will eat it. It will eventually go away on its own once it runs it course.
