Hair Algae!

So, I inherited my beautiful tank, however it already had a black tufty algae problem, which was fine as it didn't grow, it was just there, and added a nice touch to the tank.
A few months ago when I bought home a guppy, I added a little of the water as well.

Subequently there has been a massive hair algae boom, it grows on everything! I've used treatments, water changes to try and reduce nitrates, but nothing works!
Currently my nitrate reading is 5PPM.

Any ideas on getting rid of it?

Thank you

Hello. Sorry that you're having a bloom. On a good note, it will eventually go away on it's own.

Someone at my LFS told me that Rosy Barbs will eat hair algae. I do not know how accurate this info is, but it might be worth a little research on your part. I haven't looked into it because I do not have room in my tank for them and my problem is slight.

Hope that helps!

Unfortunately, my tank is rather over-stocked as it is, due to the person I bought it from. Hopefully it'll just go away with lots of water changes.
