How do i get algae to grow in my tank? without buying a light.

i want a bit of algae for my BN pleco to snack.

Generally you'll want your nitrates to be a littler higher, but not too much, otherwise it can cause harm for your beloved fishies.

Take a clean jar, fill it with tank water, and add a rock and a little fish food. Place it on a sunny windowsill for a couple of days. Hopefully with phosphates and nitrates produced by the decaying food will encourage algal growth on the rock, then you can add the rock to the tank.

Or you can just buy algae wafers.

algae wafers here are like $12 for 4 or 5 inch tall can. it's not too expensive, it's just that my other fish eat it before my BN pleco has a chance to taste it.
