so tired of green water :(

I have a 20 gallon tank, we moved almost all the fish out of it gradually over the last 3 weeks and into our new 55 gallon tank. It has been going green ever since. we left two otos in there and our snail...then the snail died we got 4 black rasboras and a betta in there with the otos now.

ive been keeping the light off, but now the plants are starting to suffer. the little grassy stuff (cant remember what its called) is dying off. ive been doing 20-30% water changes a couple times a week, ive vacuumed the gravel, ive cleaned the filter, ive tried the particulate clumping stuff....

it just keeps.being.green! i cant even see the betta in there.

what else can i do? what am i doing wrong?

this is pretty green:

is the tank near a window?

a few other members have been having problems with green water lately, i'll look around for their threads, that may give you some answers

EDIT: here's one, the thread also has a link for some possible ways to treat
Green water .. ugghh

it is in a place where it *can* get direct sunlight but i keep the blind drawn all the time, so it never actually does.

im in winnipeg manitoba, so willow is out of the question, its -36* C here right now and im locked in several feet of snow!!

I have two moss balls in my 55 gallon tank. maybe i will put one in the 20 gallon tank. I dont even know if i can get another one anywhere.

That is pretty Pennywort. It is very pretty plant. Looks like fancy staircase as they grow and branches.
Even constant exposure to indirect light can cause green water. Since you are locked in, unless have NO3, PO4 test kits, how about small daily water changes with minimal feeding, that is provided your new water is free of NO3, PO4. Try completely blocking the tank from any lights other than minimum tank light given for plants (cardboard on the glass)

Several feet of snow, WOW! Guess we shouldnt complain about our snow falls, even in Buffalo where I spend few yrs schooling. LOL!

i will try doing a daily change instead of every couple days.

i too love the pennywort, im not sure if it will grow in there, its a very low light tank. i woudl like to upgrade the lighting eventually but i just shelled out a LOT of cash on the 55 gallon tank, new filter and new lighting so it will have to wait. i wish my grassy stuff wasnt dying off

I noticed when minimal lighting more small leaves develops which takes away its beauty. But would not worry when some light is given. When possible look into better light bulb for that strip. Small water changes meaning 20-25%, not a massive. try the covering method as it has help with me in the past..

Ebay is the place but make sure you read the feedback on the seller and make sure they are not trying to see you java moss on a styrofoam ball.

I got another 5 post free for £5.50 just this week (about $8)

I dont see any green on your subtrate, deco, walls, etc so im wondering what color is the food you are feeding the fish? or even things your might be suplimenting the plants? just some suggestions to go along with the rest in your other thread was some reasons why algae happens...goodluck tho!

I believe that bulb is by Hagen, though can search for other 6500-6700Kelvin Plant light bulbs. Only problem I have with plant light bulb are they emit more yellowish-greenish color. Used to add 50/50 to illuminate the colors of fish and tank in general, but not necessary. Just add Glass Canopy and add extra fluo strip w/ specific bulbs as i have and should be able to achieve well planted tank rather than spend big bucks for 10G unless find good deal on CL or ebay.
