green alge since moving tank

I moved to my condo in mid October..moving the tank was a big ordeal but it went fine..did not lose a single fish..previous to moving I never had algae in my tank. It is 55 gallon not planted ( fake plants only) the temperature and light schedule is the same and the light from external scource ( sun Light) is actually less than before moving..however now I have this bright green algae all over the gravel and plants and resin decorations..not so much on the glass..Does anyone know why this is happening and what can I do to get rid of it?

Hi Phinny
I have added a link that has a great article on the different types of algae and has photos as well. If you read through it, it may give you some ideas on what may be going on in your tank. Hope it helps..

PFP, I am not sure.. It sure is a pain! it looks bright green.. almost an unnatural color green.. I have scrbbed every ornament, Plant and vaced & Vaced ..two days later it is back.. I even resorted to the most horrid "algaefix" it had no effect whatsoever.. I am afraid od Algaefix and probebly did not use the correct dosage.. Please tell me what you are dealing with..I am curious if we have the same problem..

some things I have read regarding cyanobacteria say that it has a particular awful smell..But I did not notice a smell maybe because I am constantly cleaning it out.

If what you're dealing with is cyanobacteria (also called blue-green algae), an algaecidal product like AlgaeFix may not be terribly effective, as cyanobacteria isn't really a true algae.

PFP's thread can be found here. She posted some good pictures of what it looks like in her tank, and there's tips on possible cures there as well. But as she noted, it can be fairly tough to get rid of.

Thanks Mathas

Yeah, I'm still struggling with that stuff right now... It's really a pain.
I got some phosphate remover a few days ago and added it. So far it hasn't seemed to have an effect, but we'll see I guess.

well, it is unsightly but it doesn't harm anything to the best of my knowledge.

What I have is not at all slimy.. I have to scrub it off and it is mostly on the gravel & Decorations..not so much the glass and not in sheets or individual spots..I keep vaccing it out and scrubbing it off so it may look like that if I let it go longer.. I turned my light off after reading that the light would promote the it's growth if it is cyanobacteria...what a pain! and everything with the tank was going so well...

its not that things with your tank are going terribly wrong its just a little alagae bloom (trying to be positive!)

Thank You for your encouraging words fishlover78! I am thinking I know where it came from.. I went to a LFS to get a timer for my sister's tank @ 2 weeks before Christmas. I remember thinking that their water looked yucky, but I could not resist getting two Glo- Danios. I was really carful not to get thier water into my tank and even quarentined the new fish in some of my own tank water..somehow there must have been cross contamination! I have had my light off 3 days.. it seems to be slowing down..
