In short:
Cyanobacteria is a simple organism that seems to be a cross between bacteria and algae. Some forms are very important to the
nitrogen cycle. A few, however produce potent toxins as their waste products. Even these are not problematic unless the circumstances are ideal for growth.
Once you have some in an aquarium, it can be very difficult to get rid of. I nearly lost a
betta to it a couple of years ago (which is what caused me to write the above article).
