Green algae (pea soup looking)

We've had an explosion of green algae for the past 12 days or so. It started with white particulate matter floating in the water then it turned a little green and now you cannot see through the tank it's so green and murky. I've cut down the light to maybe 1/2 hour a day. I've closed the shutters on the windows so no sunlight is getting in the room. I've only fed the fish flake food 1 time per day and only a small amount. We've done water changes multiple times a week. What else can I try? I haven't had any casulties yet so I guess that's good but it's no fun looking at soupy water.

Any ideas?

Less light, A micron filter if available, and / or a UV sterilizer.

You really can't Water Change this stuff out. You can kill it, or filter it out.. Or just cover the tank so NO LIGHT AT ALL gets in there for 3 days then check it out.

Once its gone lower you light levels in the tank.

hi lisamommy..what size is your tank? and what fish are in it? I think a few 50% water changes, treating the tap water with prime, and keep doing the lites out no sunliight will fix it...natural sun is something that gets the algae raging..so maybe move the tank also...goodluck!
