Ok now it's time to do a black out. Turn the lights off cover the tank so absolutely no light can get in. Leave it for 3-4 days. Don't feed the fish(it's ok they can go long periods of time with out food). You will be depriving the algae of two things it needs food and light. At the end of this time remove the covering,do a large water change and gravel vacuum to get all the dead algae out. Keep us posted.

the water is a touch on the cloudy side but besides that its fine.hopefully it will clear over the next few days.no sign of the algae re appearing so hopefully thats the end to that problem.and on the upside my monos are alot livelier again after doing the large water change.they were not eating much and very sluggish for about a week or so before i did the blackout
So if everything is still ok come the weekend i will finally get to add some more fish to the tank.
Thanks again for all your help Carol

You have some monster fish there, are you making plans for a larger tank?

Looking at your statistics for this tank it is 190l or 50 gallons, all the fish you are currently keeping in there grow large up to 14", require good water movement and good filtration. Unfortunately the filter you have is only rated for a 40 gallon. This is part of the cause of your current tank concerns.

I would suggest adding an aquaclear 110 HOB to increase both the filtration and movement. This should also help the build up in the gravel.

Welcome as always. Keep those water changes up and watch over feeding so the algae won't come back

Hi carol,
the algae has gone but im now struggling with cloudy water. It has a green tinge to it.The local shop said it was down to lack of bacteria after doing 2 large water changes but i dont think thats the problem.
Thats 2 weeks now that the water has been extremely cloudy.
On Friday i came home to find 1 of my monos dead and the sharks picking at it.I did another 80% water change. On saturday nigt i came home to find 1 of the sharks dead.Just not having a good time of it just now.
During all this my water tests have all been spot on.can you help please.
