Ok. I've put tank water from my 40 gal. in a glass jar. I've been trying to grow brown algae but no luck yet. I've heard that in a couple of days I would start seeing some grow. I keep a lamp on over the jar for about 16-18 hours a day. Should I keep the light on 24/7?

I thought that Brown Algae (diatoms) showup when there is low/less lighting!?! Do you have some Gravel/Sand/Silicates to help?

You don't have a food source in the jar so it probably won't grow anything(fish poo, flakes etc). Brown algae (diatoms) will grow in a new tank as part of the stages it goes through to becoming a mature tank.

well i have been "feeing" the jar fish flakes and so far I havent seen any results. And no i dont have gravel in it. Maybe I should put some in...I think i might do that
