White algae ? White 'stuff' help ?!
Hi,
Can someone take a look at the photos below and tell me what this is ?
It is growing all over my driftwood (with java moss).
I am thinking of taking the driftwood out and stripping all the java moss off it and leaving it out in the sun for a week to hopefully rid the piece of wood of the algae/stuff ?!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ps Looked in the 'algae' section and could not find anything matching this 'white algae' looking problem that I have.

My driftwood had something similar. Did you recently add it to the tank? I don't think it is anything to worry about. I just got a few cory cats to eat the algae and did frequent water changes. It went away on its own in about 3 weeks.

I agree it isn't any thing to worry about. I've had similar in a tank, and adding otoes and a bn pleco took care of it.

The tank is about 1 year old and the driftwood is about that old too ...
Strange that it started appearing after so long - I thought it might have been something that I was doing different ?
Looks like it will be OK then.
I have taken out the piece of driftwood and given it a scrub anyway just in case. If it comes back then what ?
Otos .. flying foxes right ? algae eaters ?

Any algae eater or catfish will probably do the trick. The guy at my LFS said that this stuff can be due to a build up of nitrites, but I don't know how accurate that is. I have not double checked the info, and we all know how those fish store employees often tend to be wrong.........

Tank is cleaned once a week for the last year so it can;t be a build up of nitrates .. coz I have not added any new fish ?
I have washed the driftwood and will let it dry for the next few days. Will see what happens when it goes back in.
Thx

Well, I'm thinking one of two things.
1. The driftwood has mold growing on it.
2. Their maybe a calcium buildup.
a1.-You might need to get new driftwood.
a2.-If it is calcium several fish will eat it. I think mollies are best at it of them all. Although, I am not sure if that is it or not.

I have this on the bottom of my tank on the gravel in a couple different areas. Tank is fairly new set up, only has a jack and Picassamus(sp?), was thinking maybe over fed a little trying to get the jack to eat in his new tank. All levels check out so not sure what this is? Should I clean the gravel and do partial water change?

I just noticed I have the same thing on my driftwood, right now it is only 4 little spots. The driftwood is only a week old and the tank is going through the nitrogen cycle.

Hi I a newby....but I am so glad I am not alone in this....I have had exactly the same problem....thing is..I never had it prior to putting in bog wood....took bog wood out as I didnt like the colour of my water even though I did soak it, and water changes, but didn't know if it was the wood or white gravel doing it..anyway, I now have different gravel and plastic plants..water back to normal, but, I have an attack of this white slimey goo..took everything out scrubbed it, cleaned filters as it was all in there, and changed my carb....that was 4 days ago...low and behold, looked tonight and the thing is coming back...the LFS told me it was a friendly Bio-bacteria...I don't know if this is right, but any help would be gratefully received on how to tackle it....and what it exactly is, I think it is from the wood....
Sorry to go on

Get a bottom feeder. They will eat this white algae substance in a heart beat. They actually really like it, mine ate all the white algae off my driftwood in just two nights. He is 10 1/2 " long though, haha. So smaller algae eaters might tank them a little longer.

Hi
After scrubbing all my stuff, and getting a couple more suckers, the white algea is subsiding. I went and spoke to a bloke at LFS, he is amazing with knowledge. I explained and showed him a pic of this white algea stuff. He knew straight away it is from the wood I had used in the tank and explained that is was a type of simular to mushroom fungus. It causes no harm to the fish they will eat it. I am glad I got rid of my bogwood and replaced it with other hiding holes.

i can't tell from the pic are you talking about on the sea shell or the plants? Does it look like the white fuzz algae on the drift wood in the top pic?

It's the white stuff growing on the pink and dull yellow plants. Yes it does look like the white algea growing on the drift wood.
