duplicate by mistake do not read

About a day after I purchased some plants from a dealer I noticed blue-green fuzz had started to grow on some of them. Do I need to start taking measures to prevent an algal bloom? My tank is still cycling. Thanks for any advice!

Hi!

When the cycle is finished - then Nitrates should be to little for Algae. When the tank is cycled - are you planning on adding any algae eaters? A 20gal doesn't really have much space for algae munching fish, but if you had Live Plants they would help.

Yes, I do have live plants. Argentine sword, java moss, wisteria, cabomba and a few others. Despite how it sounds my tank isnt very heavily planted. I was thinking of getting one of the smaller species of plecos. Either that or a common pleco and then I would upgrade to a 50g+ in 6-12 mo. depending on how fast the little guy grew. My tank has been cycling for 6 days now.

Hi!

Bristlenose plecos (5") are the best Algae eating fish around. However, if you can finds Zebra nerite snails they are brilliant! They are small (2cm), avid algae eaters.

Hi!

Don't worry! Algae isn't much of a problem in a properly maintained tank - and a good cleanup crew like a BN and 3 Nerite snails really helps.
