Hey all. My tank is mid cycle from what I can tell because I have nitrite and nitrate readings. I have a power compact light running 12 hours a day. It's a 29 gallon. I just noticed today that I have small brown algae spots showing up around the tank. I'm thinking they are diatoms. Is this any indication that I'm almost done with the cycle? What can be done to clear them up? Thanks!

Hi there,
Diatoms are almost always present in new tanks during the first six months. There really is not much you can do about it as I have found. Other than continually cleaning it off your decorations and glass etc. It will not harm the fish, but looks pretty ugly compared to how nice and clean a new tank looks.
In my case at the six month mark they finally disappeared. It was great not to have to continually clean it off. Its just something we have to deal with, but feel good that it wont last forever!
