| Betta My daughter got her birthday present early. She and I went out together today and we stopped by the LFS and checked out their bettas since she was with me. They didn't have any purple ones, so we went to Wal-Mart, which was our next stop. There, they had a purple one and she instantly wanted him. So now he is ours. And she wants to name him Jessica, after her best friend. lol
He is hanging out around the bottom, I hope he is OK. He's probably just adjusting to having SPACE. Here are some pictures. |

| Thanks everybody! My daughter is very happy with her betta, I'll let her know you all like Jessica, too.
bolivianbaby, we had a guinea pig named Daisy that turned out to be a boy! We found out because we thought we had two girls together, then one day there was an extra guinea pig, only much smaller than the other two lol. |

I found out ours was a boy when I picked him up one day and got a "surprise". |

| I just love DIY, so when I saw the sticky about how to make a tank divider for bettas, I just had to try making one. Of course, that meant that I had to have more bettas! I bought two more CT males. I couldn't decide between them so I got them both! I don't know if it was the CT, but more likely the coloring, that made them stand out to me. There was also a DT that I liked but he had some brown on his forehead and I didn't know if it meant something was wrong with him or if it was just his coloring. He was white and green marbled. Well, here they are:
1. I think I will call him Prince.
2. I don't know what to name this guy. At first I thought "Peacock" but he really isn't as macho as the others. I couldn't get a good picture of him flaring, because he didn't do it as much as the others. I also thought of a few 'o' names, for no reason in particular, Obsidian, Onyx, or Othello. This picture makes him look thoughful or reflective. lol
3. And this is Jessica, my daughter's betta. This seems to be his chosen color morph.
4. The Betta Condominium. It's a ten gallon with the dividers and a screen lid, and individual decor just to be interesting. I don't plan on adding anything else. Last edited by Algae Eater; March 2nd, 2010 at 01:05 AM.

| oh no. I just got a great idea.
I have a 2ft x 1ft x 1ft glass aquarium. Something just told me it would look great with a few dividers and some bettas in it! |

| I bet it would! It was fun making mine. I already want to go back to the store and get that delta tail I couldn't decide on. Of course, then I would need another tank and then I'd technically have enough room for one or two more...
BUT I think I would get kicked out if I did that! |

| My betta tank is going through a mini cycle. I did a water change and dosed with Prime. I wouldn't have noticed if Jessica hadn't been acting sluggish and loosing his color on his face. I just thought he was stressed about moving to his new home--well, he was, but not for why I thought. I hope he is OK.
I love my bettas--I want more! I think it would be nice to have a ten gallon tank on the kitchen counter with more pretty bettas in it!! Maybe I could buy a new piece of equipment every month, so it wouldn't seem like I am spending so much?? But I better not... |

| I need rehab. Yesterday evening, I took the kids outside and the thought occured to me that all we had to do was pile into the car, I'd grab my purse and we could "visit" the pet store. Well, "visit" turned into buying, of course. The pet store still had the marble delta tail that I wanted before, but didn't get because of the brown stuff on his head. I also saw a double tail that caught my eye, mostly because it was just different from other bettas, having two tails. I bought them both!
Well, the only space I have left are my two critter keepers that I use to Q tanks, but I need those, so I'm safe for now, until I upgrade these two new boys to a 10 gallon. So I guess I wont be going anywhere for a long time so I can avoid the pet store.
Here they are. If anybody can tell me what that brown stuff is on the marble's head, please let me know. I came up with nitrite poisoning. Thanks! |

| Well, I decided to name my black multicolored betta Popeye because of his missing eye and I'm calling the dark teal marble "Moo." The double tail I might name Caramel. So now they all have names.
I had to float ice on Caramel and Moo's tank because it is so hot outside. Well, it was only 60 F but our house retains heat like an oven.
Oh, btw, my husband told me that if I can practice breed some pet shop bettas to prove that I can actually do it I guess, then I can get some nicer ones on aquabid!! I've seriously been thinking about it, but I go back and forth, as I know it's expensive, takes up a lot of space that we don't really have and also a lot of effort and knowledge (that I also don't have). I've already got a lot of the supplies, though. I guess using "practice" bettas would be a good idea to see if it would be an serious option. I love fish and I want my own fish shop one day, even if it takes one tank at a time!! Maybe it will be a betta shop!! Who knows... |

| Your bettas are awesome! I especially love the DT! That would be fun to own a betta shop . . . . .*dreamily thinking about the future* If I ever owned my own betta shop, I'd have to figure out some way to keep the bettas other than in those little jars! |

| Thanks! Yeah, I don't know if it will ever happen but I can always dream! Maybe when my kids move out (in a decade from now at least) I can use their bedrooms to start out in. "Sorry, honey, you wont be able to come home for the holidays, I needed more bettas..." lol |

| I thought I didn't have enough room for one more...
Here is Bunny, my first female. She's a royal blue CT, I think. Well, I'm sure she's a CT but not about what the color is called. It's a really pretty deep blue, not green like the first picture shows. The second is more true to what she looks like, and she also has red on her ventral fins. She's very active and wouldn't stay still for a clear shot and the tank isn't lit well, either. She's in my son's guppy tank with a divider. |

| That is a really lovely female you got there, her fins especially. Did you get her at a chain store or LFS? (or elsewhere?) I'm having a devil of a time finding decent ones at brick and mortar stores... |

| Thank you. I got her at Petco, where she was hiding way down at the bottom of the display. You could ask your local stores when they get their shipments in, so you can go check them out the day or day after they arrive. I go there often and check out the betta sections every time. (But I often end up buying more than one and I'm running out of room!) Maybe you could get a mom-and-pop store to order some for you also. Or find a local breeder? The females are too cute! They really don't get the credit they deserve! |

| I'm waiting to hear back from a local breeder actually, hoping he gets back to me soon. Unfortunately the two nicest LFSes I've found in the city don't normally carry female bettas. I guess I'll have to ask explicitly if they might put in an order for me. I'll also ask the Petco folk what their shipping schedule is, but I'd rather not patronize Petco if given the choice...part of it is a general chain store stigma, but part of it is just a really creepy employee who's always there when I go. Your female there is much nicer than most of the Petco stock I've seen in the past few weeks though. But I'll keep trying. |

| Thanks again! She is really nice, and healthy and active, too! She wasthe nicest one there, and I think she was just hidden from view, but I dig around when I look for things lol so I got lucky! All I've got is Petco and one other local pet store. Neither of them are that great. Petco is the only place of the two that regularly has bettas, and females at that. I hope you find some! |

| Alright, so here is the story for this one...
I took the kids to Wal-Mart and while looking around I noticed that the store had gotten in new bettas. Sure that I wouldn't buy any, we went over to take a look. Well, this one had so little water in his cup that he could barely swim. When I commented on this, my son James, who is five, wanted to save him. He saw the sink in the fish department and ran over to it with the betta trying to pry off the lid, all the while yelling at me to help him. At first, I was going to, but I thought about the trouble I might get into if something were to happen to the fish--it would all be on camera that I had "vandalized" Wal-Mart merchandise. I told James I couldn't do anything, but he was so upset that I didn't want him to wonder about what would happen to the fish, and I figured a $5 betta was better than $5000 bond, so I asked him if he wanted to take him home and of course, he did. He named him "Super Fish Mario" because he is obsessed with Super Mario Bros. lol |

| I'm pretty sure my daugher's betta, Jessica, has dropsy. Yesterday, I was alarmed to see that Jessica had a swollen belly because he hadn't been eating for days. Today I noticed that he might be pineconing. He looks kind of roughed up, especially were he is swollen. He swims about slowly, floating just above the bottom until he needs air.
When we first got him he acted listless, but after a couple weeks he seemed to liven up. Then, when I introduced him with Prince and Popeye, using his filter, into the bigger 10 gallon tank, he started acting lethargic. Then, worse still, he started losing his color. I tested the water and saw that the tank was going through a mini-cycle so I didn't think there could be any other reason for his behavior. I figured that Prince and Popeye weren't effected by the mini-cycle because they had just come from a very tiny cup full of bad water. Prince did seem to have some inflamation, though, but I medicated him and he seems fine now.
It might be hopeless, but for my daughter's sake I'm going to try medicating him. At least, she'll feel like we did something. |

| I'm so sorry. Could you post pics and have you seen him poop? He may be constipated.
If he truly has dropsy, Maracyn Plus treats gram positive and gram negative bacteria. If I'm not mistaken, dropsy is a gram negative bacteria.
Hang in there! We're keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers. |

Hang in there! We're keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers. | Have you checked your water parameters today? If not please do so. Do you have a place to quarantine him where he is alone? Dropsy is not a disease it is a symptom of something else wrong. Sometimes it's hard to know what's wrong.
some of the possible causes are
water quality
bacterial infection
kidney failure
If not quarantining him I suggest a large water change. Maracyn and Maracyn II are good meds for a bacterial infection.
Unfortunately when they start pineconing it's frequently too late to save them but he's a fighter. Please keep us posted on how he is doing.
