power head submersible pump

I just bought a 42 gal aquarium from criagslist with a ton of stuff included. I'm kind of new to this whole thing and was curious if i needed the power head submersible pump or if it wasn't needed? The tank is set up already and has been cycled and i now have 8 mollies and a cory catfish. They all seem ok but wanted to know if they'd benefit from more circulation or if they don't really need any more.

I don't think that a powerhead is NEEDED, but a powerhead with a venturi does add aeration wich is not bad (you can also get aeration from a pump and air stone) ... plus you can add a filter to most powerheads which will give you additional filtration which is always a bonus.

If you have some cash to spend, I say get one that is able to give you aeration and filtration. I spent $75 for mine in Canada (rated for 70 gallons) ... so you should be around $50 or so.

I would also give your cory a few friends ... he/she will be much happier.

Enjoy!

It depends. What kind of filtration is on the tank other than the powerhead? You can use it if you want, but if the filter on the tank is sufficient then it's not necessary.
