How do I size my pump?

I looked at the Tetra whisper pumps today.
They say"up to 20-30-40 gallon tank etc.
I don't understand what the tank size has to do with it.
I'm trying to supply a bubbler and figure if I want it quiet, I need as small a pump as will support my device? I bought a roung bubbler about 5 inches in diameter.
Advice?

I don't use bubble wands or airstones at the moment, but when I did, I just followed the manufacturer's recommendations, and for once I found them to be accurate. LOL.

You mean if you had one tiny bubbler in a 60 gallon tank you would use a pump designed for a 60 gal tank?

Simple really. When they say rated for such and such tank size they are assuming an average height of the tank. The greater the tank height the greater pressure at the bottom of the tank (where most airstones/bubble wands are placed). Basically the deeper the tank the more force is needed. Get the one rated for the size of your tank maybe bigger.
