Bubble Wand?

I have a dual air pump with 2 outlets, and was wondering about the possibility of a bubble wand. The thing is, I have an under gravel filter, with air tubes running up each side of the tank. My Dad said it's probably not a good idea to unhook the air tubes from the pump, because it might diminish the filter's ability to do it's job properly. Then again, it's been some years since he last had a tank lol.

I'm wondering whether unhooking the air tubes and just having the bubble wand going would affect the filter at all? I wouldn't have thought so personally, but I'd like some opinions before I go messing about with my tank again. I finally have it all running smoothly and it's looking awesome. I'd really rather not screw it up if possible.

hi
depending on the power of the pump, you shouldnt have any problem. It may diminish the flow some tho. I have used the duo pump as well, and when I do it does weaken some. It will work if you get a stronger more powerful pump.

Thanks for that.

I think if I go with the bubble wand, I'll just unhook both airlines, and close one pump outlet off while using the other for the bubble wand and see how that goes.

Most dual pumps are actually two pumps in one assembly. They share the power transformer only. You won't get more air out of one outlet if you shut the other down.

Why not using another airpump for your bubble wand? Airpumps are quite inexpensive and easy to install. I wouldn't risk depriving your UGF bacteria colonies of air.

On the other hand, you could try using a two valve distributor in one of the outlets, keeping air going to the original hose in the UGF and also feeding the bubble wand. Keep in mind you might need some trial and error in adjustments until you manage to keep both ends receiving enough pressurized air.

I would do it the way pepetj said.Airpumps aren't that expensive. If you discontinue the air bubbles from the undergravel filter tubes, you also shut off the flow of water through the undergavel filter. They work by the bubbles going up,causing a siphon-effect for water to be pulled through the gravel. No flow and the bacteria in the gravel wont get enough oxygen and will die.

You can get a powerhead for the undergravel filter tubes to take the place of the airstones, and pump;but the powerheads are more expensive than an air pump.
