I have found the Aquatic Gardens(Petco) and the RenaAir50(Petsmart) to both be quiet and workable with a Gang valve to lower the bubble output.

I also felt Elite was noisy to me.

Elite 801, with check-flow-valve and a distributor, can run easily a sponge filter and at least a good size airstone. If you hang them (from the rubber hole), the noise is gone. They do rattle in platforms, no matter what position, but once I hanged it from the stand (actually it's behind the tank) and problem solved. This is the one I have in my 5.5gal tank.

Funny enough, I find the basic 1-outlet Aqua Culture air pump at wal-mart works fine for tanks that size.
