Buffalo Heads...again

So, I decided a while back that I wasn't going to get buffalo heads because my 29 gallon (new to me at that point) wasn't going to be big enough for everything I wanted to keep, so the buffalo heads ended up falling by the wayside. Since then, I've gotten a 75 gallon that I consider to be semi-aggressive. I can't find much info on these guys other than they shouldn't be kept with aggressive cichlids because they're "peaceful" (when the term is applied to cichlids of course...I'm sure they're no comparison to my swordtails) and that they can be kept in the right community tank. I know for sure that I have enough hiding places/caves for when spawning time came for a pair, and I would be alright on bio-load, but what I'm not sure about is weather or not my other fish will be able to defend themselves when spawning does occur. What do you guys think? I appreciate any advice...the only cichlid I've dealt with so far have been the rams, and it hasn't been a breeding pair so I know I'm entering into a whole new ballgame if I try this.

Buffalo Head cichlids are so cool! I wish I could find some by me. They should do fine with your other fish. Good luck with them and be sure to post pics!

Oh yay! The cichlid queen found my thread . I'm so glad to hear that you think they'll work in my tank. I know there are no guarantees, but you have much more experience than I do. I'm going to order them end of next week (I'll be out of college for the summer, so I'll be able to acclimate them myself), so I should have them mid-may. I will be sure to post pics...I can't wait!

Ok, I contacted the guy I'm getting the fish from and he said that he's selling juveniles. I think I'm going to get 6 fish, hoping to get a breeding pair. What gender mix should I get? 3M/3F, or 1M/5F to give more options? He said that they are sexable, so that's not an issue. I'm just new to the breeding game, so I don't know what will give me the best likelihood to get a pair. I already have a place ready for the other fish once a pair forms.

Also, how will I know when 2 of the fish "pair off"? Thanks for the help.
