from what i know cichlids are a very hardy fish but create alot of watse. i can't tell you how many to keep in that tank but don't put to many in, and keep an eye on your water.

With that size of tank you will be limited to the amt of different species of cichlids you can put in there ie: one trio of yellow labs, one trio of cynatilapia afra. That is just an example, you dont' want to get 2 of any 2 groups, like 2 lab species, 2 met species.

I would stick to the cichlids which are smaller and less agressive such as labs, cynatilapia afras, demonsoni (you would have to put a group of 6 or larger together of those guys).

In that size tank 8-10 is the max I would stock it with, making sure there was plenty rocks, and hiding spots. Also a heavy duty filitration system, on my 36g peacock tank I have a eheim canister and a penguin biowheel, both overrated for that size tank. You would also want to do very frequent water changes, I do 2 a week on all of my tanks.

I would only put 2 Malawi species 1 male to 4 females so 10 fish at the most of one who only get 4-5" at most. 38g would need double the filtrations
Here the best place to learn about African cichlids, Malawi, Tanganyika, Victoria and West African. Join in there and they can tell you all kinds.
