| Can someone identify this fish? Hello, could anyone identify this fish. She/he is a refugee in my tank, rescued from my son's tank, the other fish set upon this fish's mate and pretty much killed it. so we took this one out, but she/he is alone and I'd like to get her/him a mate but she/he is only in a 120litre tank and I don't know if it's fair to keep her in there. Any advice would be welcome;-) |

| Upload the original pic on windows program called Paint and resize the photo. I think the photo size is just too big to upload.
It looks like a Jack Dempsey. http://www.fishlore.com/profile-jackdempsey.htm
If it is, you need a bigger tank. Last edited by eiginh; October 2nd, 2009 at 06:46 PM.

| You can try using this website. http://www.picresize.com/
Did you look at the Jack Dempsey profile? Your fish looks like a Juve JD. |

| My first thought was a Dempsey too, but the finnage and head shape don't look quite right, thats why I asked for a bigger pic. |

| Thats better Kirsty, great job! It's definatly not a Dempsey. It looks a liitle like a Jewel Cichlid, however I think its an African that I'm not familiar with. Don't worry though, there are plenty of people on the Forum who will be able help. |

| Its a type of Geophagus or Gymnogephegus. Not sure which but the ones i could guess are:
Gymnogeophagus meridionalis
Gymnogeophagus rhabdotus
'Geophagus' brasiliensis
Gymnogeophagus sp. "Blue Neon"
Definitely not from Malawi though 100%. |

| What other species of fish was he housed with in your sons tank? That might help with identification. |

| I'm not hot on cichlids, ....so excuse my ignorance;-) he was in with some labs, some haps, some pseudotropheus, some frontosa, some catfish and some striped fish which I can't remember the names, but they are quite aggressive. Here is a pic of one of the pseudotrophus, now that I've got the hang of resizing;-) |

| although blood red jewel cichlids are from africa, they arent as aggressive as the africans you have mentioned...the jewels are aggressive tho ..I keep mine with jack dempseys, convicts and blood red parrots......so they cant be kept with tetras and smaller fish ... |

| Hey Kristy
That fish is 100% Geophagus Brasiliensis or Geophagus Iporangensis.
If it grows past 4-5" it is Brasiliensis if not it is Iporangensis.
Look up info for G. Brasiliensis, as you won't find much on Iporangensis, same care for both fish except one gets bigger.
Either fish is a great fish and will look better and better each day. Good luck with it.

I have a list that has my fish and their big old scientific name in case I need it but I have to go look at it since I just cannot remember those names. |

Pearl Eartheater is the only common name I know, however that name is used for a few different fish. The problem in this common name is in the name itself, as G. Brasiliensis is not a true Eartheater. Many times you will see it's name like this.... 'Geophagus' Brasiliensis.
I fits more in the Meridionalis, but those have been being reclassified lately also, so now you have some fish labeld ex-Meridionalis Gymnogeophagus N. sp. Norte and so on.
So its common name of Pearl Eartheater really is not very acurate at all as it is not an Eartheater, which is a very over used term.
If anyone asks say you have a Brasilienisis...brazil-e-en-sis.
Hope that helps.

| It may look like it now but if taken care of properly a G. Brasiliensis will grow to a foot long and about 6-7" tall.
The lips give it away, check out the second pic she posted and look at the lips.

| Same shape, but these lips will be fuller. Kind of like red devils(labiatus) or lips. Try to find some pics of a true red devil and some of the common ones seen at LFS, they look like they have had injections to fill out their lips.
