I have one of Those in my 1.5 gal, and it does work. Very low flow but it does it's job.

I attached an image I drew of a simple air powered INTERNAL filter (sticks on the inside of your tank) that you could conceivably make with a PB jar.

Why does it work? I'm pretty sure (I don't really know the physics of it) that the air bubbles going up towards the surface create an updraft inside that little tube on the bottom. This updraft causes the water to flow up inside the filter, and raise the inside water level to about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch above the outside water surface. It's positioned so that the outlet is just above the outside water level, therefore allowing gravity to drain the water back out, and forcing the water through the media. Want more flow? get a bigger tube and a more powerful air pump.
