So for about 3 hours today I shaped my first DIY cave with clay.

I had way more pics but the 8 hours I spent last night making the cave was all for not. Woke up and it caved in. The pic above has way less detail work than what I just put in the over. 30 minutes and hopefully it doesn't crack.

That's very cool. Will baked clay stand up to an aquarium? Are you going to paint it or cover it with some other aquarium-friendly coating?

I think I'm going to give it a single coat of green/tanish. I may try to use the green to make the edgy rock parts stand out more.

Yes, I used sculpey 3, and it is aquarium safe. The only reason it is not food or drink safe is because of how pourius it is and promotes bacteria which is a plus for an aquarium. I hope in the future I can use the clay for terra cotta pots as this cAve costed me 17.50 in clay.

As far as I am aware, the stuff on Amazon could be very old and so old that its not the same formula as current. I bought a new matx board and it turned out to be a rev 1 which was released like 6 years ago and rev 2 came out the following year. I may try Amazon, but I am wary of the freshness.

Roughly 48hrs and the paint is still curing. Hopefully it'll be ready to go in the tank by weeks end.

Try to get the color clay you want the cave to be. I am going to need to re-paint the cave as I didn't let the paint cure long enough.
