Hello, I'm looking at getting a cockatoo cichlid in my future tank and was wondering if the male cichlid is happy being the only one of his species in the tank? Or we he be happier paired up with a female? Now I don't mind much for breeding, I just want the fish to be happy and healthy.

I think a cockatoo would do fine solo, but with a male/female pair you'll see much more interesting (and entertaining) behavior from them.

A single male will work, though they can be aggressive. Cockatoos are better off as trios or quartets if you keep both sexes. Males have a tendency to kill single females, as this really isn't a pairing up type of Cichlid.
