Visi-Jet-PS Protein Skimmer

Review
The Visi-Jet-PS made by Aquarium Systems was designed for smaller saltwater tanks, typically for aquariums up to 70 gallons. It utilizes a venturi type injector system to mix air and the tank water to create the fine bubbles needed for protein skimming. It is designed for in tank use and has a fairly sleek profile when compared to other skimmers. There are two items that need adjusting in order to get this unit to work properly. The first item is the water flow valve which can be adjusted from 20 gallons/hr up to 90 gallons/hr. The other item is the air flow valve which is simply a screw that you turn to regulate the amount of air entering the skimmer from outside the tank. To use this unit effectively you have to tweak both of these valves in order to reach the right amount of air and water flow. Too much air and you'll get tiny bubbles coming from the bottom of the unit. Too much water flow and you'll get water coming into the collection cup. Unfortunately, it took quite a while to get what seemed the proper settings for these two valves. Once we did get it adjusted correctly we were able to get a decent amount of skimmate (the brown junk skimmed off) in the collection cup after a few days of operation.

You get what you pay for and this unit is terrible! After a while it clogs every few days. Not only is it difficult to tweak -- you have to keep tweaking it every couple of days. I got it because I was tired of messing with air-stone PSs for my mini reef, but I may just go back to changing the airstone every month -- less hassle. (Would get a better hang-on PS, but I have an Eclipse hood.)

This product is a piece of junk! I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. I couldn't get the air/water flow right so I turned the air valve off and put an airstone in and adjusted the flow to about half. Seems to be working fine now. Oh and the zip ties for a pump mount is just lazziness on the engineering of this skimmer.

Had this skimmer for a month now and haven't been able to get it to work. Can't figure it out ... especially the air valve filter. The company said to turn it, but no results. My nitrates are too high; I guess I'll send it back and get something else.
